Homeschooling Gifted Children

I homeschooled my daughter for a year before she entered a traditional school. Here is a guide i wrote when I first started out homeschooling which might be of help for those considering to homeschool their gifted child.

Homeschooling...where do I start?

This is the perennial question asked by any newbie homeschooler. The answer to this will always vary depending on your preferred teaching method and your child's learning style.

At first, I wanted to stay close as possible to the structure of a traditional school. So I did a search on packaged curriculums and tons of good possibilities came up. One of the curriculum providers that always came up during my search was Abeka and the more I looked into it, the more appealing it sounded. There was only one problem - we are Catholics.

I was still unsure of what curriculum to go for when I joined our local homeschooling group. There I met many wonderful homeschooling veterans, some are Christians and a handful were Catholics. I learned that I can use some of the Abeka books and just supplement it with Catholic books for teaching religion.

So I went about choosing the books we will use and came up with our own curriculum list:

Our Pre-K Curriculum

Language Arts: Abeka K-4 Reading, Writing and Phonics Curriculum/Abeka ABC 123

Penmanship: Abeka Kindergarten Manuscript Practice

Math: Abeka K-4 Numbers Curiculum/ABC 123

Science: Scholastic's Learning Science Through Play

Religion: Kingfisher's Children's Bible Stories

Art: Abeka Art Projects K

Music: Wee Sing Bible Songs CD and Wee Sing 25th Anniversary CD

P.E.: Various outdoor activities and fieldtrips

Supplemental Books/CD's:

A Child's Garden of Verses
The American Heritage Picture Dictionary
Abeka My Favorite Kindergarten Poems
The Real Mother Goose
The Little Book of Fairy Stories
Growing Up With Amber Lamb
Bob Books First
Disney's Fairy Tales
The Children's Book of Virtues
Smart Steps Kindergarten
Jumpstart Kindergarten

Once I've set up the materials we needed, I then searched where I could buy them, preferably at a lower price. My list may look like a lot but I did manage to track down all of them in three different places:

1. Our local homeschooler's book sale.

2. Online curriculum swap groups.

3. Ebay

Not only did I manage to save tons of money by buying second hand books, but I also made some new friends along the way.

So if you're new to homeschooling here's my top 7 advice:

1. Determine your teaching method and your child's learning style.

2. Assess the subjects that your child needs and wants to study. It is imporant that you acquaint yourself with your state/country's homeschoolng laws.

3. Determine your final curriculum list and daily schedules of subjects to be taught.

4. Join your local homeschooler's group.

5. Join an online homeschooling support group.

6. Search for your books by joining online curriculum swap groups, going to your local homeschooler's book sale and browsing online stores such as Ebay. NOTE: Always exercise caution when buying online.

7. Pray

Homeschooling can be a joy if you've done the necessary preparations.

My Greatest Joy

September 26th 2006 14:31
A page from her Mermaidia coloring book
Okay I'll admit, I'm a very strict mom. My daughter has to follow a certain schedule especially on a school night. Our rule is, no TV and going out on weekdays. But on weekends she can do whatever she likes, within good reason, of course. She also has her own set of chores, like cleaning up her toys after she plays and setting the table. If she does something unacceptable she gets sent to a corner for five minutes.

But before you think I'm a tyrant let me assure you that even if I'm strict I do know how to have fun with my child. We do play... a lot. And we have so much fun together. My daughter is also free to express her thoughts and feelings without fear. In fact, she's very vocal with us and can be really stubborn at times.

Tough love is what they call it, although I seriously doubt I'm coming off as tough to her since she can be bossy at times.

Nevertheless, one of the things I really stress is that she study hard. If there's anything we can give her it's the privilege of a good education.

And I feel it's finally paying off...

She is my greatest joy...our gem, far more priceless than anything money can buy.

I hope and pray that God will continue to bless her and guide her so that she'll grow up to be an amazing lady gifted with intellect, a good heart and strong faith. I know she's already blessed with beauty, hehehe.

You Are Amazing No Matter What They Say

September 25th 2006 00:43
We all try our best to keep chaos to a minimum
You think you're doing a pretty good job, you're starting to feel proud of yourself. Then someone comes along and makes you think otherwise.

They ask polite questions, yet you know there is something beneath the surface. They inquire about your kids, are they eating right? Do they go to bed before 9pm? And they frown when they see your child still alert at half past ten.

You let them into your house and you are sure they're summing up the place. They visibly shake their heads at the clutter they see and go about trying to rearrange and tidy up every room.

They make a fuss about your sheets not being blindingly white, the kind you see on detergent commercials. And they rant and rave about how things should and shouldn't be done.

You fight back the urge to say something hurtful, and so you keep quiet and let every word pass you by, stonefaced. And you are able to keep your calm for they do not know a lot of things...

They do not know how many times you sang to your child so she'd fall asleep, even if your own eyes are heavy from lack of rest. They do not know how you always make sure your child eats well and that you patiently wait for her to finish her food before you could eat, even though your own stomach is growling. They do not see that when you wake up you make a mad dash out of bed so you could sweep the floor, put things in their proper corner, cook, do the laundry and all those things you must finish before your little one wakes up. They do not see that your child is a happy and loving person, that she's smart for her age and not afraid to speak her mind. They do not know that you give more importance to connecting with your precious one than the sheets not being as white as they should.

You seldom get the praise and acknowledgement you deserve, yet like a rock being hit by strong waves, you continue, undaunted. You are strong, you know your worth, you have the toughest job in the world... you are a mom.

Fellow mothers, no matter what other people say, never doubt for a moment that you are truly amazing!

All By Myself

September 24th 2006 00:50
In a way children are like kites...
If you're a Bridget Jones fan as I am you'll remember that scene in the first movie where Renee sings "All By Myself" while looking so depressingly forlorn. Well, I understand, if you're single and in your 30's being alone can be sad, not to mention slightly alarming.

Now that I have been married for 7 years I find myself wanting to have more "alone" time. Not that I'm complaining, being a wife and mom is one of the greatest adventures I've ever had. The adventure still is rivetting as the day I first entered married life, I just need to be "All By Myself" sometimes.

Areas of Giftedness

When a child is gifted it doesn't necessarily mean that he/she excels in all areas or in every subject. As an example my daughter's reading and math skill is quite advance but her penmanship needs a lot of work.

There are different areas in which a child may be gifted in and it includes the following:

Family Fire Escape Plan

Last night there was a fire in the bulding right across where we live. It's just a stone's throw away so it was really scary. Luckily the building is a diagnostic clinic and nobody was inside. However, it was across an apartment complex where several families live.

Thick smoke was coming out but the fire was contained inside. My husband called the fire department and they responded immediately. After a few hours the fire was put out.

Beyond the Awards

My daughter is very shy, of course she isn't when she's at home and with the people she knows. But when she's in a different setting or meeting new people, she clams up. It takes time for her to warm up to others, even kids.

That's why I was very anxious her first day in Kindergarten, I thought she might bawl and throw a fit, but surprisingly she didn't. A week later, she had to take the bus going home. Again I thought we would have a hard time with this transition, but she appeared to enjoy it.

Ideal School?

An ideal school for gifted learners is one that uses a differentiated curriculum designed to motivate and challenge the student. In addition to that, teachers should also be well-trained to address the needs of gifted learners. Also, the school should offer extra curricular activities and enrichment programs which will benefit students socially, physically, emotionally and mentally.

I've read a lot about TAG, a K to 8 school in New York using an accelerated curriculum and progressive teaching techniques. More info on Talented and Gifted School (TAG) here

Gifted Programs

There are different programs created to support gifted learners. The two most commonly used programs are:

Acceleration - Children are placed at an academic level based on their academic performance and not based on their age. At the high school level this is known as Advanced Placement (AP), where students tackle college-level subjects and they receive credit for any completed work.

Assessment Tests

September 16th 2006 13:39

Parents who suspect their child is gifted sometimes feel uncomfortable to have their kids tested. I can relate, when my daughter's teacher recommended she be tested for giftedness, I felt both elated and guilty. Elated because other people, especially a teacher, noticed that my child's intellect is quite advance for her age and thus confirmed something I've been suspecting for quite some time. But I also felt guilty because I didn't want my child to be burdened by any test and to feel pressured.

To appease my worries I did a lttile research on the types of tests she will be taking. I also talked to the tester and asked how the test will be conducted. I was assured that it will be presented like a game and that my child will not feel pressured in any way. I also spoke to my daughter so that she'll know what to expect.

Violin Prodigy

Young musical prodigies are children, usually not older than 11 years of age, who show excellent musical ability and mastery of playing musical instruments. I saw this awesome video of an 8 year old girl on YouTube and thought I'd share it with you. Kudos to gripo1983 for uploading this video.

In Retrospect

September 12th 2006 04:30
In a way I've had my suspicions that my daughter is "gifted". Pardon me, I really don't like labeling anyone, especially if it's my child I'm talking about. But I can't think of any other appropriate word for it right now. So I'll just use the politically correct word - gifted.

Anyway, looking back from when she was a newborn I can now clearly see the signs:

My Daughter is Gifted…Now What?

September 11th 2006 00:32
On January of this year my daughter brought home a letter from her teacher requesting permission that she be tested for "giftedness". Of course I was surprised, I know my daughter is smart but I never seriously considered she is gifted. After the shock died down, the feelings of euphoria soon engulfed me and I began calling people I know telling them of this latest news. Yes, I admit I'm a bit of a stage mom.

The next letter from her school arrived a few days later. This time it was an acceptance letter informing me that my daughter has been tested and the tests revealed that she is indeed gifted! Of course this news had me jumping up and down to the amusement of my child. But after the euphoric state came the daunting question....what now?
