Buying A Car - A Newbie's Experience

December 29th 2006 21:01
I consider myself a practical shopper, one who compares items based on price and quality before making a final decision. It takes me quite some time to buy an item, especially if it's for personal use. I tend to compare items from different stores before I decide which one to purchase.

But when it comes to cars I am absolutely naive.

I know nothing about them except that it takes me from point A to point B. There are only two main points I consider when choosing a car: 1) That it is fuel efficient and 2) That it has a good safety record.

We bought our first car in 2005, it was a Toyota Corolla LE. I loved that car, when it comes to fuel efficiency, the LE is on the top of the list. It also has good crash test results. For a while the LE served its purpose as it took us to where we wanted to be, but after moving to 2 different locations in 2 years we soon discovered we needed more leg and area space. Which reminds me early this month when we bought a Christmas tree and we had to remove it from the box so that it would fit in our car. Yes we needed a bigger car that was still within our budget.

Our first choice was a 2007 RAV4 Limited, I really like the way it looks plus it is bigger than the LE. My husband wanted a V6 engine because we did notice that our LE, which was a 4 cylinder, has difficulty going uphill or when we are lugging around heavy stuff in the back. A V6 engine has more power but it will also consume more fuel. So we went to our car dealer and found out that they only had 4 cylinders available and if we wanted a V6 engine we had to place an order and it would take three months for the vehicle to arrive. We asked for the price of the RAV4 and considered what other vehicles were in the same price range. There were three:

1. 2007 Toyota Highlander - 4 cylinders, 2 wheel drive, I like the look, bigger than the RAV4 but hubby wanted a V6, 4 wheel drive.

2. 2007 FJ Cruiser - Not fond of the look, ample leg and area space, has V6 engine but only 2 wheel drive.

3. 2006 Tacoma - Nice looking truck, very spacious, has V6 engine and 4 wheel drive. It was $2000 less than the 2007 Tacoma model but with very slight differences.

The Tacoma clearly had what we wanted, it was big, strong, fast and dependable. I was only having one problem, I wanted a 2007 model. I went online to see exactly what makes the 2006 model different from the 2007. After learning that there were only two differences, which are quite unoticeable in my opinion, we decided that at less than $2000 the 2006 Tacoma was a good deal.

So we traded in our trusty LE for the Tacoma and we got it yesterday! We took it for a drive and it handles really well. We got the double cab, SR5 Package which includes a 6 CD changer with 6 speakers. I must say the exterior is impressive but the interior is absolutely awesome.

So yes we are happy with our new vehicle and it's one we plan on keeping for a long time.

If you are planning on buying or trading in your vehicle my advice is to really do your research first before you go to the dealership. Also, if you are availing of financing. try to go online if they have special offers because sometimes the dealership is either not aware or won't tell you about it. In our case the financing company has a special low interest offer for items over $20,000 but the dealership wasn't aware of it (they said) until we pointed it out and showed the website.

Are you planning on buying a car? What model/s do you like and what is your dream car?

I've been really sick for days but now I'm feeling better. Still a little weak but certainly feeling much better. I also lost some weight 'cause i haven't been eating much these past few days. And it's ironic really given that this month is the season for overeating. Last night i attended my husband's office party and the buffet table was overflowing with food. Alas, I didn't have any appetite. And this evening we went to a house-warming party and again I didn't have that much of an appetite. Looking on the bright side though i did lose some weight

Anyway, as I mentioned I attended my husbands office party last night. it was held at the Hilton and there were lots of food, games and of course prizes. Towards the end of the party there was a raffle, we weren't expecting to win cause we're not really lucky when it comes to raffles. But you know what happened? We did win! Yes, great things happen when you least expect it.

It's really awesome cause we won the two top prizes, one is a Motorola Razr cell phone and the other is a free overnight stay with meals and drinks at the Hilton. Needless to say my faith in raflles has been restored.

Have you ever won in any raffles? What prize/s did you win?

Have you ever Googled yourself?

December 19th 2006 15:47
Well, my daughter's feeling better but now I'm the one who's coming down with the flu. I rarely get sick but when I do it's really bad. I just hope I'll be ok before Christmas day. So I'm sure you'll forgive me when I post this short yet intriguing question.....

Have you ever tried Googling yourself? By this I mean have you ever searched for your full name on Google? What about your blog or website url? What have you discovered?

I Never Learn

December 18th 2006 05:45
Yesterday I received an email from my Editor, it was a nice letter basically telling me I'm performing my job well. Of course this made me very happy and excited so I began writing a response. Halfway through my letter I accidentally hit the back button and since I haven't saved what i've typed up, everything was erased. Bummer.

So today I decided to sit down and answer my Editor's email, this time I reminded myself to stop and save what i've typed so I won't accidentally lose it. I was typing, it was becoming long, but my mind was racing, my fingers could hardly keep up and i didn't want to stop. And then.....yes, I hit the back button again and everything was gone!

Do you believe in Karma?

December 16th 2006 18:34
Karma in Buddhist teaching is defined as the consequences of your actions/decisions whether it be intentional or not.

In Confucianism there is the Golden Rule - "Do not do to others what you do not want them to do to you."

Natural Cures for Cough

December 15th 2006 05:25
My daughter missed her last day of school this year due to a slight fever last night. This morning she is coughing and has a runny nose. Yes, it's the flu.

When this happens I go for natural cures first before moving on to medicines. I learned this from my mom who was into herbal remedies and most of the time it did work. Since this is the flu season in most countries because of the change in weather, I'd like to share some of the natural remedies for cough that my mom taught me.

Can You Dance Like This?

December 14th 2006 02:32
This is another personal favorite of mine, it's called "The Evolution of Dance" and the guy performing is an inspirational speaker/performer.

My only complaint is he didn't dance the "Macarena"

I Must Be Doing Something Right

December 14th 2006 02:17
This morning my husband and I attended our daughter's Christmas program at school. This year the theme was "What Christmas Means to Us" and each class from Kindergarten and First Grade presented a song and dance number.

The first one to perform were those in the gifted program, they played "Mary Had A Little Lamb" and "Jingle Bells" on the flutophone. My daughter was sitting in front and they were wearing red vests and a Santa's hat. They did really well.

In the Spirit of Christmas

December 13th 2006 11:38
Maybe you have already seen this, it was all over the net last year but I never grow tired of watching this. It's an elaborate Christmas lights display synchronized to muisc by the Trans-Siberian orchestra. My daughter was asking me if we could do this 'cause it's so cool. Imagine how much our electrical bill would be though

Just wanted to spread the spirit of Christmas here on Orble. Happy Holidays!!!

Sometimes in the pursuit of our dreams and our desire to provide for our family, there is little room left to do the little things that truly matter. Sometimes we forget to appreciate the people around us or fail to see how much we are appreciated.

To fellow moms out there, this is for you.....

Time-wasters

December 8th 2006 11:32
I'm a firm believer that all work and no play makes Hope a miserable woman As a work at home mom currently writing for 5 different websites while taking care of my daughter and babysitting the child of a neighbor, not to mention taking a writing class on the side, my day can be pretty hectic. So you'd understand why I need to unwind at the end of the day. Trouble is I don't drink neither do I smoke, I'm also not a party animal, yup, I'm pretty boring. How then do i unwind,? Well this is were time-wasters come in.

Time-wasters are stuff to do online that are quite enjoyable and interesting.. Time-wasters aren't necessarily a waste of time as most needs reasoning and critical thinking to play it. Some are even so engaging it becomes addictive in a way. But all in all its good, clean fun. Here are my favorite time-wasters:

What color is your soul?

December 7th 2006 10:03
Ok, I admit, when I'm home alone I do something foolish yet fun....I take online quizzes! Here's one from Quizilla, it's supposedly to determine the color of your soul. My result is:

Yellow...You are a very loyal and optimistic person set on bringing happiness to the world. You are very charitable and if you didnt have wings we would all assume you were in angel. You have a wonderful and vived imagination. Your words touch many and bring joy and hope to more.Though you are smart you tend to be hyper and come off ditzy and annoying to others. You really just want to help and make this place a BETTER place...there arent many of you out there and you should be commended. You may seem very innocent but you arent, you just choose to keep things APPROPRIATE...though I cant say you havent had your fair share of make outs! Your good traits are that you are purely sweet and really try to help. The downside is that you come off ditzy and sometimes you try to help TOO much.Your best feature is your smile and hair because they glint and show your beauty.Animaluppy Life quote: Imagination is more important then knowledge Love quote: Love *sigh...I love falling in love! Appealing eye: blue Heart material: Gold You are a very loyal person who would never betray another. It is in your nature to try to cheer up others..and you tend to be very good at it.You are a fantabulous person that many love and cherish. Keep shining your light! Just remember not to blind anyone

Songs that make you cry

December 6th 2006 03:34
Songs elicit different kinds of emotions in us, most are attached to a certain memory. There are many sad songs that have been written, from the downright depressing like "Solitaire" to the cynically sad song like "You Oughta Know" by Alanis Morissette. But seldom have i come across a song wherein just reading the lyrics made me cry.

I'm talking about "Cats in the Cradle" by Harry Chapin.

I had the most awful dream

December 4th 2006 18:42
It's 4am, I just woke up from a very bad dream and I'm pretty sure I won't be able to go back to sleep now. Hence the blogging.

In my dream my husband, daughter and I were staying in a hotel/resort. We were about to go to sleep when we heard a knock on the door. We were informed that there were some minor problems in the hotel and they needed to check it. We were asked to vacate our room for a while, we went out and there was a small crowd of people in their jammies all walking out of the hotel. Then my husband remembered that he forgot something in the room so we went back. We noticed that our daughter didn't follow us so we started searching for her but we couldn't find her.

What I learned from a day of shopping

December 3rd 2006 16:27
As a freelance writer my income varies each month, it can be as meager as a few dollars or as blissful as a couple thousand or more. This month I got a nice paycheck and I swore to give myself a treat because, hey I deserve it, don't I?

So I made a list of the items I wanted to purchase, most of them are for personal care such as my fave brand of shampoo and conditioner, face powder, lipstick. I also wanted to buy new pants and blouses. I really got excited as I was jotting down my "must haves". You see I seldom buy stuff for myself, often I end up buying things for my loved ones and saving the rest.

What is your personality type?

December 1st 2006 04:53
I'm currently taking a writing class and one of the things we discussed recently is how your personality affects your writing. There is a personality indicator based on C.J. Jung's theory about the human psyche, it's called the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator or MBTI.

Based on this there are 16 identified personality types, I found out that mine is ISFJ or Dominant Introverted Sensing. According to the test, people with this personality type are "dependable, reliable and trustworthy, loyal, conventional, likes to volunteer, have good memory". What hit home is that when ISFJ's start a project they will see it to the end. That is so me.
