Well, it's nice to be blogging again. I sure missed the few days I was unable to blog to attend to other responsibilities. To those who manage to blog daily, i bow down to you
On to today's topic.....
Early this year, a local high school student passed away after laying in a coma for 2 months. The student was a 15 year old male who was badly beaten up by a schoolmate while they were in school. The reason? They were fighting about a girl.
Currently the perpetrator is held under bail, and though residents theorize he may have had an accomplice, he maintains that he did it alone.
This is such a tragic incident for the family of the boy who died, for the school authorities because they are being questioned why there was no security available to prevent such incidents and for the family of the student who is now in prison.
Above all it is a tragedy for the victim who's life has been cut short.
Every year thousands of students around the globe are being subjected to bullying. I know how it feels to be bullied because I experienced it when I was a child. My husband was also bullied in school when he was young. I remember when I was in first grade there was this girl who repeatedly made fun of me. Once she stole my belt and tossed it inside the principal's office which was vacant at the time. I had to go inside the principal's office to retrieve it but when I went to open the door to exit I realized she locked me in. I was able to get out of the room after the pirncipal herself unlocked the door, surpised to find me there. Good thing is I was brave enough to tell her what happened and the bully was reprimanded.
As a parent, bullying is one of the things I hope my daughter never experiences. I talked to my daughter about this when she entered school and told her that if anyone was being mean or hurtful to her she should not be afraid to tell us and her teacher. I ask her everyday when she comes home from school what she did, what she learned or anything she wishes to share. Open communication is important if we want to know what's going on in our child's life. Also, teaching them about respecting others and self-respect is vital.
Have you ever been bullied? Were you ever a bully? Please share your thoughts.

My daughter received an award in Reading today and needless to say I'm thrilled!. I started teaching my daughter how to read when she was 4 and six months later she was already finishing easy readers.
Today at the age of 6 she is reading at a 3rd grade level. Yes, she is a strong reader but most importantly she loves to read and is excited with all the things she learns from each book she finishes.

My parents never spanked us, well, not that I recall. Their method of disciplining was talking to us with raised voices and/or telling us to do several chores. My husband's parents also never spanked him and his brothers.
When we became parents we never really talked about how we would discipline our daughter. i guess we thought we'd know what to do when the opportunity presented itself. When my daughter was younger and if she was being particularly difficult I would place her in a corner and ask her to stay there for several minutes. That seemed to work.
Since I'm having trouble finding the time to update my blogs, i thought it would be best to merge my two blogs here on Oorble. So starting today IFreebies Galore will merge with Gifted Parenting. I will still post topics about parenting and life in general plus post free stuff that are available online.
This is something i never thought I would be faced with - the difficulty of losing weight. I've been thin during my elementary years and all throughout high school. I remember my parents were very worried of my weight that they gave me different vitamins to boost my appetite. I wasn't that sickly though, I was just not a big eater.
Then during my college years I gained a little weight, enough to be called slender and not thin. My friends would express their envy of how I can eat anything and not gain a single pound.
Every week we try to rent dvd's for each of us - one for my daughter, one for me and one for my husband. This week we rented Air Buddies for our daughter, which, of course, we watched as a family. My husband on the other hand rented Lucky Number Slevin, which he watched alone cause it's not for kids and i'm not particularly fond of action films. As for me I rented Human Trafficking, a movie about, well, the title says it all.
I believe this has been, or sometimes still is, being shown on Lifetime TV but this is the first time I've seen this movie and it really shook me. This film is so intense, powerful, alarming and eye-opening. It depicts something that is still occuring rampantly in society - human trafficking.
My daughter used to be very shy, she used to get scared whenever we brought her to the park to meet other kids. She was easily overwhelmed and it took her time to adjust to new experiences, sorroundings and people. I knew my husband and i had to do something to at least minimize her shyness. You see both my hubby and I were really shy as kids and as a result we missed many opportunities. So of course we wanted our child's life to be different, to be better. Not that there's anything wrong with being shy but there is such a thing as being too shy.
Thankfully, today our daughter is less shy and she is more adventurous. No more feeling frightened when we take her to the park. She has many friends and is more open to new experiences and meeting new people.
Happy New Year to all! May 2007 be a year of wonderful discoveries and opportunities for all of us. Here's a short video clip of the fireworks display in my hometown.
So what do you resolve to do this year? At the top of my list is for me to be more focused, especially when it comes to my writing. Let me know your goals for 2007.
