Mom Makeover - Lose Weight

June 20th 2007 17:16
When can you tell that it's time for a makeover? When people think you're older than you really are, that's when. Personally I've been needing a makeover for the last, oh, three years or so. What's always stopped me is the state of our finances, and although we're still not financially stable, I strongly feel it's about time I got my X Factor back, lol. It's not even a matter of being vain, it's more of a health concern at this point.

First off, I need to lose 20 or so pounds, I'm only 5'2 and this excess weight is starting to take its toll on my ankles. Everyday when I wake up and get off the bed, I can feel the stiffness on my ankles. I also get breathless and tired easily, not to mention it's harder to put on jeans. I've never been blessed with a flat stomach even when I was at my skinniest, but now with the added weight I look three months pregnant.

So my first step in my Mom Makeover is to lose weight and this I plan to do the old fashioned way, by eating right and exercising. I've started walking this Monday and I've also bought the book "You On a Diet" and I'm following the exercises there. My plan is to walk everyday for at least 30 minutes and to incorporate the "You On A Diet" exercise daily.

Next, I need to address my diet which is really hard because i have a child at home who needs proper nutrition. It's difficult to stick to a diet when you're cooking for a growing child. Not that my daughter doesn't eat healthy, but that there are certain nutrients kids should be getting. So this part is a struggle for me. But what I plan to do is to have a bowl of cereal or oatmeal for breakfast, rice with fish, chicken or veggies for liunch, and a sandwich or salad for dinner. I'll incorporate more fruits, veggies and seafood in our diet, cut down on sodas and other sweets. We've been using only olive oil for cooking and have avoided beef altogether but still eat a little pork. Hopefully these diet and lifestyle changes will help me lose weight and get fit.

Keep your fingers crossed for me. Feel free to share your diet and exercise tips.

As parents we should instill in our kids the love of learning as this will ensure that they will do well in school and eventually in the real world. One great way to continue learning even though it's summer break is to create a reading list for your kids. Choose books that are 1. age-appropriate and 2. interesting to your kids.

Here are several books from the summer reading list I created for my soon to be 7 year old daughter to give you an idea:

Alice the Fairy by David Shannon
Frog by Susan Cooper
Gigi and Lulu’s Gigantic Fight by Pamela Duncan Edwards
Jamela’s Dress by Niki Daly
Make New Friends by Rosemary Wells
A Mud Pie for Mother by Scott Beck
Someone Bigger by Jonathan Emmett
Cam Jansen and the birthday mystery (Cam Jansen series) by David A. Adler
Lucky Little Bear (Little Bear series) by Else Minarik
Muggie Maggie by Beverly Cleary

Remember, you don't need to buy these books, just visit your public library.
