Your Kids and the Internet

December 18th 2007 01:38
Megan Meier was a 13-year old who, like many other teens, wanted to find new friends. She created a profile on MySpace, the popular social networking site, and soon met a new friend, a boy named Josh. At first everything was great but after a while things changed and Josh turned against her. What happened next was a tragedy that ended in Megan's suicide. Later it was found out that Josh isn't real, it was a hoax created by the parent of one of Megan's old friend.

You can read more about this story here. Video will luanch as you visit the webpage.

In my opinion the perpetrators should be brought to justice and stricter rules should be imposed by social networking sites.

Also, as parents here are some things we should keep in mind when it comes to our kids' computer use:

1. Talk to them about the possible dangers lurking behind the internet. Remind them never to give out any personal, identifiable info.

2. Place the family computer in an area of the house where you can easily monitor your child. For example, in your living room instead of your kids bedroom.

3. Limit cmputer use, especially on weeknights.

4. For parents of young kids, never let your child use the computer unsupervised. There are loads of crazy things kids can see online nowadays.

5. Keep the lines of communication open and be aware if there are any changes to your child's behavior that may suggest something's wrong..

If you have additional tips, please share it with us. Let's keep our kids safe.

Then head on over to your local cinema, bring the gang and watch "Enchanted". And don't forget the popcorn!

What's your parenting style?

December 5th 2007 12:57
How do you discipline your child? For me I do it verbally, whenever my child acts in an unacceptable manner I immediately call her attention to it. I don't like spanking, although i know there are parents who effectively use this type of disciplining. There are times though when my daughter gets on my nerves and I have to resist the urge to pinch her.

Here's a quiz created by Dr. Larry Craft that will help determine your parenting style. I took the quiz myself and the result I got is this:

Hope On Stage

December 4th 2007 01:59
Well, the virtual stage that is. There's this really great website called Sims On Stage where you can sing along to songs ala Karaoke style and then record your voice. You can also post your recording publicly and see what others think about it. There are other fun things to do such as create Mashups, post poems, etc.

Here's my first attempt, pardon the bad recording, my mic is being uncooperative. (Nah, that's just my excuse, pardon my voice really.)

The Heelys Phenomena

December 3rd 2007 05:38
I started becoming aware of these shoes a year ago while at the mall with my daughter. There were several kids who passed us by wearing shoes that had wheels on the heels. It turned out to be a new brand of shoes aptly called Heelys.

Since then my daughter has been asking us to buy her a pair. At first I said no, it looked dangerous. Then as time went by and I saw more and more kids wearing them, the Heelys bug bit me. I found myself visiting several shoe outlets carrying the brand, but was always told it was out of stock.
