Is your child into sports?

Let's swim

My husband and I are both non-athletic people but we do enjoy light activities like walking, table tennis and biking. Our daughter, on the other hand, is into swimming. She's been taking swimming lessons since last summer and has advanced into the next level.

Having your child involved in a sport or any kind of physical activity is beneficial, not only physically, but also emotionally. It teaches your child sportsmanship, teamwork, patience and discipline, to name a few.

For young children, setting a playdate with his/her friends in a park or playground under the supervision of a trusted adult would be a good idea. Preshool-aged kids would have fun learning how to ride a bike, jumping rope, playing with hullahoops, hopscotch etc. School-aged kids may like getting into team sports like baseball, soccer and swimming. Or perhaps individual sports like tennis, biking and running.

Remember, choosing which sport to play should depend on your child's interest. As parents our role is to determine whether the sport is age-appropriate, whether the coach is qualified and if the facility is safe and suitable for the chosen activity. Monitor your child's progress, provide the equipment he/she needs for that sport, be supportive and be present for your child's games as much as you can.

As Tiger Woods said, "Don't force your kids into sports. I never was. To this day, my dad has never asked me to go play golf. I ask him. It's the child's desire to play that matters, not the parent's desire to have the child play. Fun. Keep it fun."

Overhaulin'

March 27th 2008 00:28
I felt Gifted Parenting needs some tweaking to accommodate a cornucopia of topics that my regular visitors, parents especially, might find interesting. So to better serve my audience, (yes, I'm talking to the 10 or so of you ) I decided to dedicate each day of the week to a specific topic.

Beginning this week, Mondays will be about gifted kids in the news, Tuesdays will be dedicated to freebies, Wednesdays will feature a website that is kid-friendly, Thursdays will spotlight cool, family-friendly videos, and Fridays will be my personal sharing for the week. I'd probably be offline on the weekends but I'll post when I have something juicy to share.

So there you have it folks, let me know your thoughts.

Video of the Week: Old Barbie Ad

March 27th 2008 00:12
According to the person who uploaded this video, this was a commercial for If You Were A Fashion Model Like Barbie which was released in the 60s. I collected Barbie's when I was young so this was great to watch.

Website of the Week: Orisinal

March 26th 2008 23:57
Orisinal is a lovely site which has several web-based games that are simple enough for kids to play and yet engaging enough for adults. I also love the fact that the games have no titles or descriptions on them, just an icon. Choosing a game is like opening a door without knowing what's on the other side. Simply choose an icon and see what game it brings you.

I love going to this site to unwind, the games are beautifully designed and the music that comes with each game is relaxing to listen to.

Cool Find of the Week

March 20th 2008 17:54
It's been a very hectic week for me so I decided to chill out by surfing - websurfing that is.

I chanced upon this really cool website called Meez. They let you create an avatar of yourself that you can fully customize; from the body shape down to the shoes. You can also make a video using the image you created.

Stand By Your Cheating Man?

March 12th 2008 12:17
Yesterday I learned a very sad and surprising news from one of my friends - she found out her husband is cheating on her. The affair started long before they were married and what's more shocking is, the guy has a child with the other woman. The child is much older than my friends children, so clearly the affair has been going on for a long time. Right now she's confused whether to fight for him or to end their marriage. What she does know is that she will never look at her husband the same way again - the trust has been severely broken.

Although I've been fortunate enough (and I hope it remains so) to be married to a very loyal husband, I know what cheating does to a family, kids especially, because I come from a broken home.

The Lowest of Low

March 8th 2008 15:54
This news just makes my blood boil!

My husband told me something he heard on the news this morning - it was about an assistant teacher who stole a student's lunch money on several occasions. Stealing the lunch money of a student? Where's your conscience? And to think you're a teacher! What's more, the student she took the money from has severe autism and cannot speak.
