Oh No, Not Miley!

April 29th 2008 04:10
Parents love her, young people look up to her. I'm talking about Miley Cyrus aka Hannah Montana, the sweet, level-headed and talented girl we see on the Disney Channel. Miley has built a billion-dollar empire based on her squeaky-clean image, not to mention, millions of fans who adore her.

Recently though many of her fans aren't happy about Miley's Vanity Fair pictures. She is set to appear on the covers of Vanity Fair's upcoming issue with pictures taken by renowned photographer Annie Leibowitz. If you do a Google search you'll understand why many of her fans aren't pleased with it. I, for one, am very disappointed.

There seems to be a lot of finger-pointing going on; Disney is blaming Vanity Fair for "exploiting" Miley and Vanity Fair is reasoning that Miley's guardians were there during the photo shoot.

Didn't anyone involved in this photo shoot even realize that Miley is a minor? Whether it's for the sake of art, shouldn't we avoid subjecting a minor to these types of photos even if they agreed to do it? Would you want your 15-year old daughter posing like this? I should also mention that Miley has issued a public apology.

What do you think? Will Miley's image be tarnished because of this?

It's Friday...Let's Have Some Fun

April 25th 2008 09:20
Your Love Life is Like Pretty Woman
"I want the fairy tale"

You believe that love is truly blind, unpredictable, and surprising. Two very different people can easily find true love.
At least, that is how it will happen when you marry a gorgeous billionaire someday

Your love style: Sensual and flirty

Your Hollywood Ending Will Be: Surprisingly happy

You Are the Ace of Hearts
Youthful and playful, you love life and the world.
You have a kind spirit, and you bring happiness to everyone you know.

Artistic and bold, you see the world in bright colors.
And you certainly aren't afraid to express everything you see and feel.

You are sentimental, and your emotions are very deep.
You are easily swept away and easily hurt.

A gamble you should take: Blackjack

Your friends would describe you as: Unique

Your enemies would describe you as: Weepy

If you lived in Vegas, you would be: An up and coming chef or fashion designer

You Are a Grilled Cheese Sandwich
You are a traditional person with very simple tastes.
In your opinion, the best things in life are free, easy, and fun.
You totally go with the flow. And you enjoy every minute of it!

Your best friend: The Peanut Butter and Jelly Sandwich

Your mortal enemy: The Ham Sandwich

Draw and Learn

April 23rd 2008 05:27
Do you love to draw or want to learn how to improve your drawings? Well, I just discovered a really cool website called RateMyDrawings.Com. You can register for free and create different types of artwork - from abstract to self-portraits. They also have a number of competitons going on.

I'm a lousy drawer, in fact, my 7-year old draws way better than I do. That's why I really like the tutorials section of this site, I even learned how to draw a tree, although in my case it looked more like a twig.

Are we desensitizing our kids?

April 18th 2008 06:15
I'm sure most of you know about this case in Florida involving a teenage girl who was beaten by 6 female teens whose age range from 14 to 17. The beating went on for about 30 minutes while 2 teenage boys stood outside as lookouts. The beating was so severe that the girl passed out while it was going on. The victim is said to be suffering from vision and hearing loss as a result of the attack.

What makes this incident so shocking is that it was all caught on camera. Apparently the girls planned the attack, luring the victim into the house under false circumstances and proceeded to beat her as the cameras were rolling. I saw a footage of the film but couldn't watch it in full because it was just so gruesome. The victim wasn't even fighting back and even as she was knocked unconscious because of the severity of the beating, her assailants proceeded to beat her when she regained consciousness.

In the News...

April 7th 2008 23:15
Does your child have a TV in his/her bedroom? A new study conducted by the University of Minnesota School of Public Health revealed that teenagers who have televisions in their bedrooms aren't as healthy or smart as those who don't.

My daughter has a TV in her bedroom but she's always been a straight-A student. I guess this study doesn't apply to her because she belongs to a younger age group.

Let's go cloud watching

Years ago I wrote an article comparing games children played during the 70's and 80's versus the 90's. Most of the examples I cited on that article were based on my childhood memories, I also drew upon what I noticed among my nieces and nephews who, at the time, were into various gaming consoles such as the Playstation.

Video of the Week:

April 3rd 2008 00:46
This is a classic Shirley Temple movie which was released in 1939 and is available online via Entertainment Magazine. The story centers around a girl named Sara who was sent to a boarding school when her father had to leave for the war. The school was managed by a strict headmistress. Sara lived an affluent life but when her father was reportedly killed in the line of duty, Sara's life was suddenly turned upside down.

You can watch this video online by choosing your connection speed (i.e. dial-up, dsl/cable). I love this movie and I'm a huge fan of Shirley Temple. This is something the whole family will enjoy watching.
