Gifted Parenting - Parenting a Gifted Child

Chronicling my journey as the mother of a gifted child.

Gifted Parenting - May 2008

In the News Today

May 29th 2008 00:14
The Willow Run Community Schools in Michigan will soon be offering programs for gifted and talented children in 2nd to 6th grades. For those who live in this area, more information is available here.

I cannot stress enough the importance of having a school program that caters to the individual needs of its students. Gifted kids for example, need additional intellectual stimuation apart from their regular classes. In my daughter's school, they have a pull-out program for gifted and talented kids that lasts for one hour per week. The kids in this class get to explore a variety of topics, to create works of art and to let their imagination soar. Aside from having a good gifted program, of course it's also important that the teacher is specifically trained to teach these kids.

My daughter has flourished both intellectually and emotionally through the activitiss they do in school, especially in her gifted class. She often looks forward to Fridays because that's the day they attend the class.

Wii Fit?

May 28th 2008 01:16
Have you seen the new Wii commercial advertising Wii Fit? If you haven't here's the full trailer on YouTube. Cool huh? I'd love to give it a try, especially the Yoga, but I wonder how much the whole system will cost?

If this product succeeds to deliver what it's selling, then I think it's a good addition to any fitness routine. But of course nothing beats the real thing. Like soccer for example, the thrill of the game is playing with a team, feeling the heat of the sun and the earth under your feet.

What do you think of this new product?

Last night I watched a fascinating show on the Scifi channel called Ghost Hunters. This is about a team of paranormal investigators called TAPS (The Atlantic Paranormal Society) who are invited into homes, buildings, even ships to investigate reported paranormal activities.

Creepy Crawlers

May 22nd 2008 01:59
Spiders, roaches, lizards, worms, any insect or small creature that crawls scares the heck out of me. Cockroaches especially, whenever I see one I literally run away shrieking. I don't know where this fear of mine stemmed from but I know it started when I was around 5. I recall one of my brothers pretending to give me a small bag as a gift and when I opened it there were roaches inside. I was so frightened that I ran away, slipped and hit my head hard on the floor. Hmmm, maybe that's where my fear came from - bro and I have to have a long-needed talk

Anyway, my daughter on the other hand is interested in creepy crawlers. Whenever she sees one she will stare at it and even touch it. Here's a photo of a gecko she saw in our backyard.

Summer Activities for Kids

May 20th 2008 06:01
In the U.S. school is out from June to mid-August. This means, we have less than 2 weeks to go until summer vacation. Every summer I make it a point to enroll my daughter in a class she likes; we began doing this since she was 6.

At 6 years old she tried guitar lessons and stuck with it for the whole summer. She actually was pretty good and progressing really fast. Unfortunately, her teacher's schedule changed so she could no longer continue giving my daughter lessons. We did try to find her another guitar teacher but she didn't like him as much as her first teacher. Today, she still plays the guitar under my guidance but not as regularly as before. Here's a video of her playing one of the first pieces she learned when she was 6.

When I was young, my friends and I made bubbles out of gumamela flowers. We would gather a few flowers, pound it until a soapy liquid comes out, add a small amount of water and voila! Bubbles! We used thin wire rods with the ends curled into a circle to blow the bubbles. We had a blast!

What do you collect?

May 17th 2008 16:12
My daughter is into collecting stuffed toys - stuffed animals to be more precise. Each of her stuffed pets has a name and a birthday - yes, the day she acquired that toy becomes the toy's birthday. Cute 'eh? We are actually celebrating Blue's (from Blues Clues) 5th birthday on June 1.

I, on the other hand, have collected various items throughout my life. These include:

Relax and Watch A Movie

May 16th 2008 00:32
With the rising cost of goods and commodities, budget-conscious families are trying to cut down on their expenses. Personally, we haven't been to a cinema for several months. But that's okay, because there are many movies in the public domain that are available to watch online for free. Just get the popcorn ready and check out these classic movies from Movies FoundOnline.Com.

Crayola Fun

May 16th 2008 00:12
Have you seen Crayola's latest commercial featuring their 3-D line of products? It's awesome, my daughter has been saving her allowance so she can buy it. In the meantime, she is having a blast creating different artworks using various Crayola products on the Crayola Digi-Color website. On their website you can choose among different drawing materials like pencils, crayons and markers to create colorful works of art. It's something you and your little one will enjoy.

The Rise and Fall of A Prodigy

May 13th 2008 14:24
"Lost Genius", a book by Kevin Bazzana, chronicles the life of a piano prodigy named Ervin Nyiregyhazi. I must admit I've never heard of Nyiregyhazi.or his music until now.

Read the book review from the Chicago Tribune. I also found a short clip of him playing the role of Franz Liszt in the movie"The Lost Zeppelin" (he's the one playing the piano).

We recently experienced a magnitude 6.7 earthquake where we live. Although there were no reported injuries and damages caused by the quake, this incident made me realize that we were unprepared for such calamities. Of course natural calamities are very unpredictable but having a family emergency and escape plan would help us think clearly and act fast when the need arises.

In the News...

May 6th 2008 14:25
My daughter was tested for giftedness when she was five years old. Usually, IQ tests are administered to kids when they enter Kindergarten. However, it appears that a school in Washington state will be giving IQ tests to preschool-aged kids. This is because the said school will be starting a program for gifted children. Piano Lessons on YouTube

May 6th 2008 14:00
I've mentioned before that I was relearning how to play the piano and even uploaded some videos of the pieces I was learning at the time. Good news is I've learned more pieces since then and I'm looking to add more to my personal repertoire.

One piece I really like to learn is Claire De Lune by Claude Debussy. I usually learn from reading music sheets but this time I wanted to try something new - video tutorials. So I went on YouTube and found this very interesting way of learning piano.

Fun Website for Kids

May 6th 2008 13:23
A really nice website I recently discovered is Creating Music. On the said website kids can compose their own music and explore their musical abilities. I tried my hand at their Musical Sketch Pads and came up with a good enough arrangement. Unfortunately there is no way of saving it so you just have to take my word for it . Visit Creating Music here.
