Video of the Week: Nancy Drew

August 29th 2008 02:57
I used to collect these books by Caroline Keene when I was a girl. On days when I have time for some light reading, I borrow new editions of these books from the library. If you're a fan of this smart, female sleuth and fond of watching old movies, you'll be pleased to know that a film based on this series is available in the public domain. The movie is titled "Nancy Drew...Reporter" starring Bonita Granville as Nancy.

You can watch the film here. Enjoy!

Have you heard of BigFish?

August 28th 2008 01:34
No, it's not the kind you see at your favorite sushi bar. I'm talking about BigFish Games, a website that let's you try out their games for free online. You can download any game you choose and play it for an hour, sort of test-driving before you buy. Games are grouped together according to type making it easier for you to choose which one/s to download. They also have games for kids.

If you like puzzles or word games (like yours truly) be sure to check out the following:

Agatha Christie - Death on the Nile
Dream Chronicles (1 and 2)
Dream Day Wedding (and follow-ups of this game)

Hidden Secrets: The Nightmare
Virtual Villagers (and follow-ups)
Pat Sajak's Lucky Letters

I download games from BigFish whenever I want to unwind and sometimes I let my daughter pick a game and play it after she fiinish her homework. So head on over to BigFish and have fun!

In the News...

August 26th 2008 06:04
In Netherlands, a spokesman for junior Education Minister Sharon Dijksma announced that €10m will go to fund gifted programs for children in primary grades. (Wish we had that kind of funding in my state.)

Memories of Disney

August 25th 2008 07:12
Going to Disneyland has always been a dream of mine, a dream which started when I was in high school.

I clearly recall one lazy afternoon having a particularly solemn talk with my friends and pondering what we envisioned for our future. We were on our last year in high school; everyone was feeling anxious about leaving our beloved alma mater and going our separate ways. Back then thinking about going to college was pretty terrifying, so instead we focused on the distant future. One of my friends asked, "Where do you think you would be when you turn 35?" Each of us took turns mulling over this question...

Take A Free IQ Test Online

August 18th 2008 06:24
I chanced upon a website called IQ Test Labs which lets you take a timed IQ test for free. After the test you will be given a detailed analysis of your results along with suggested careers in the areas you excel at.

I took the test and scored within the "Higher Average" rank. I particularly scored high on the Verbal and Spatial skills and, not surprisingly, scored low on Math. It's also interesting to note that writing and photography are among the recommended careers listed on my report. Writing and photography are in fact part of my current job description, so that's good to know.

Disney's Animal Kingdom

August 13th 2008 06:07
Animal Kingdom was the last theme park we went to during our one week vacation in Orlando. Apparently, this is the largest among the Disney parks; it focuses entirely on animals and what we can do to protect them.

RIDES/ATTRACTIONS WE EXPERIENCED:

I don't get the chance to watch TV as much as I used to but recently I chanced upon an episode of Supernanny. The episode I watched has your usual dose of misbehaving kids and flustered adults, but what struck me most was how much the parents bickered in front of their children. There's this scene where the parents were having an argument while their kids were present and one of the children wrote this message; "Shut-up or break-up!" You can see the parents visibly taken aback when they read this message.

That particular part of the show really made me sad because I know how it feels to witness two of the people you most love tear into each other day after day. My parents had their share of flaws but they were wonderful people when they were apart. Together....well, that's a different story.

Our next stop at Walt Disney World was Magic Kingdom. Magic Kingdom was the first theme park built at the said resort and it opened in 1971. Here is where you meet your favorite Disney characters; from Mickey to Ariel. To reach the park you can either ride the ferry, or if you're in a hurry, the monorail.

Disney's Hollywood Studios, formerly called Disney-MGM Studios, was the next theme park we visited. The inspiration behind this park are the numerous movies, television shows and musicals that have shaped today's entertainment industry. Going to Disney's Hollywood Studios is like stepping into a quaint little town filled with colorful characters.
