Fire Safety Lesson Plans

January 28th 2009 12:19
A few years ago, a building near our home caught on fire due to faulty electrical wiring. Since then, my family and I have made a fire escape plan so we can be prepared for such accidents. It's very important to discuss fire safety with your children and device an effective escape route. Yes, accidents happen but that doesn't mean we shouldn't be prepared for it. Here are some lesson plans you can use in your home or classroom:

Fire Safety for Young Children

Fire Lessons from NYS Dept. of State
Fire Curriculum For Students
Fire Safety: Activities to Spark Learning
Basic Fire Safety from USFA Kids
Lesson Plans from FireSafety.Gov for Kids

Get to Know Daniel Tammet

January 26th 2009 05:49
I just read a very interesting article about Daniel Tammet; a gifted 29-year old who excels in languages and numbers. .Take note, he learned how to speak Icelandic in just one week. Wow. Meanwhile, I'm still learning how to count from 1 to 10 in Japanese, LOL. Daniel was diagnosed with Asperger's four years ago; the rest of his story is on this page.

What are you reading?

January 23rd 2009 05:57
They say you can learn a lot about a person from what she is reading. The nifty tool you see below is from LibraryThings.Com; a website that enables you to create your own reading list and connect with people who are reading the same books. You can also post your list on your blog or website. Judging from the books I'm reading, what do you think I'm up to?

In the News...

January 20th 2009 05:09
An article in The Arizona Republic talks about "cluster" classrooms for gifted children. This is being practiced in my daughter's school and I personally agree that it has certain benefits for younger children. But, now that my daughter is in third grade, I feel the need for a more appropriate structure. Read the article here.

If you live in the area, the Greenwich Post announced an upcoming lecture to be conducted by Dr. Nadia Webb, co-author of Misdiagnosis and Dual Diagnoses of Gifted Children and Adults. More info here.

Does Your Child Know What You Do?

Yesterday, I had a very enlightening conversation with my 8-year old; she asked me to describe what my job is. It made me think, that even if our children knows what our jobs are ("Mom's a writer, Dad's an engineer", etc.) they may not fully comprehend what we really do for a living. This is what makes "Take Your Kids to Work Day" very important, which unfortunately isn't so popular where we live.

The Christmas season came and went by so quickly and most of us are still in holiday mode (I must admit I still haven't taken down our Christmas decors). Going back to work or school (or what I call "back to reality") can be challenging after a long holiday. This is especially true for children, because it's not easy for them to shift from play to work mode as quickly as adults can.

Inspiring Quotes for the New Year

January 2nd 2009 14:50
I've come to believe that each of us has a personal calling that's as unique as a fingerprint - and that the best way to succeed is to discover what you love and then find a way to offer it to others in the form of service, working hard, and also allowing the energy of the universe to lead you. - Oprah Winfrey

Personality can open doors, but only character can keep them open. - Elmer G. Letterman
