Controversy Over a Coloring Book

April 30th 2009 13:28
Controversy arose over a coloring book that was produced by the Freeborn County Crisis Response Team and posted on the Federal Emergency Management Agency''s (FEMA) Web site. Why? Apparently, the coloring book, which was meant to help kids come to terms with traumatic events, depicts tragedies and disasters, including 9/11.

The said coloring book was designed by two therapists with the help of an illustrator and has been posted on the FEMA Web site since 2003. It has now been removed from their site due to numerous complaints.

Here are some news articles about this:

What do you think about this issue? Do you think the coloring book can be harmful or not to kids? Would you let your child use this coloring book? Sound off below.

Lessons Learned from Bill Gates

April 28th 2009 16:46
Is your child starting to assert his/her independence? I just read a very interesting article on The Juggle, one of The Wall Street Journals' blogs, about how Bill Gates was as a boy. Turns out one of the richest man in the world was a handful when he was young. Young Bill Gates, according to his parents, questioned authority, was fiercely independent and was very strong-willed. So how did his parents address his behavior? Read the article here.

I chose Aesop's Fables and timed it for 3 minutes. My result is a dismal 48 words per minute (net speed) with an accuracy of 97%.

Funny Answering Machine Messages

April 17th 2009 00:26
People can get very creative when recording their answering machine welcome message. Ours is the standard "Hello, sorry we can't answer the phone right now. Please leave a message after the tone." We added a twist though, I say the first line and my daughter says the second line.

Here are some very creative and funny answering machine messages courtesy of friday-fun.com:

Dewey Color System

April 16th 2009 13:58
I just took this fun test called the Dewey Color System. Basically what you do is choose which colors you most and least like and the system will suggest possible careers based on your color choices. My result is pretty accurate; my best occupational category is "Creator," meaning "Fields of interest are art, drama, music, and writing or places where they can express, assemble, or implement creative ideas. "

My second best occupational category is "Researcher," which is again very accurate. The free version of the test gives you a short report of your career profile. In order to get the full report, you need to pay $19.95. Nevertheless, try out first the free version and see if your results fits you.
