All By Myself

If you're a Bridget Jones fan as I am you'll remember that scene in the first movie where Renee sings "All By Myself" while looking so depressingly forlorn. Well, I understand, if you're single and in your 30's being alone can be sad, not to mention slightly alarming.
Now that I have been married for 7 years I find myself wanting to have more "alone" time. Not that I'm complaining, being a wife and mom is one of the greatest adventures I've ever had. The adventure still is rivetting as the day I first entered married life, I just need to be "All By Myself" sometimes.
Ironic, isn't it? These three words can either be utterred in desperation or exasperation, in sadness or in bliss.
There is another twist to the "All By Myself" dilemma...
My 6 year old daughter's favorite mantra nowadays is "I'm gonna do it all by myself". When she says that I have mixed emotions...proud and happy that she's learning to be independent, on the other hand, I also feel wistful and a bit worried that my baby is growing up so fast.
So you see, the line "All By Myself" can have many contextual meanings. Whether it be out of sadness, the need for some down time or a step towards independence, we all need to be all by ourselves once in a while.
The bottom line is, we shouldn't be afraid to be alone sometimes.
