Gifted Parenting - Parenting a Gifted Child

Chronicling my journey as the mother of a gifted child.

Assessment Tests

Parents who suspect their child is gifted sometimes feel uncomfortable to have their kids tested. I can relate, when my daughter's teacher recommended she be tested for giftedness, I felt both elated and guilty. Elated because other people, especially a teacher, noticed that my child's intellect is quite advance for her age and thus confirmed something I've been suspecting for quite some time. But I also felt guilty because I didn't want my child to be burdened by any test and to feel pressured.

To appease my worries I did a lttile research on the types of tests she will be taking. I also talked to the tester and asked how the test will be conducted. I was assured that it will be presented like a game and that my child will not feel pressured in any way. I also spoke to my daughter so that she'll know what to expect.

The two tests she took are the Raven Standard Progressive Matrices and the Slosson Intelligence Test

In our case the tests really made a huge difference. Before we learned she is a gifted child she would sometimes come home and complain that she was bored in school. Now that she's going to a gifted class she is always excited to attend because the class is more challenging and stimulating for her. It also made us understand our daughter more. Learning that she is gifted was sort of an "AHA" moment for us.

If you suspect your child is gifted there is nothing wrong if you have him/her tested, because if you don't how else would you find out? Just remember to do the reaearch, talk to the tester and prepare your child for the test. Never pressure your child and be supportive. Whatever the outcome your child is and always will be a gift and as parents we must not only nurture their minds but their hearts as well.

Here are the three most common tests used to assess whether a person is gifted:

Stanford-Binet intelligence scales
Wechsler intelligence test
Woodcock-Johnson III Battery

There's some great links there Espie. My son has to undergo some testing, more to see if he has an intellectual disability so I'm not sure if these are the ones they use. I can understand it's a difficult decision to make - it's almost like labelling your child isn't it? But we need to do it to understand where their 'heads' are!

Yes it does feel like labelling and in a way sort of segregating children. But you're right in order to better guide and support our children we must know what their strengths and weaknesses are. Goodluck on your son's test!
