Back to School Doldrums
January 5th 2009 23:29
The Christmas season came and went by so quickly and most of us are still in holiday mode (I must admit I still haven't taken down our Christmas decors). Going back to work or school (or what I call "back to reality") can be challenging after a long holiday. This is especially true for children, because it's not easy for them to shift from play to work mode as quickly as adults can.
My daughter has a default statement she uses whenever school opens after a long break - "I don't want to go to school." This coming from a child who does well in class and enjoys learning. So how do we help our kids get ready for school after a long holiday? Here are some tried and tested tips:
1. Ease into your usual routine at least three days before school starts as this will give your child time to adjust.
2. Help your child prepare the things he/she will need and wear to school the night before. This will help avoid unwanted scavenger hunts early in the morning that may cause anxiety and delays.
3. Make sure your child gets plenty of rest the night before school starts so that he/she will wake up refreshed and in good spirits.
4. Prepare your child's favorite breakfast to give him/her an added boost, both physically and emotionally.
5. Plan a special activity with your child after school so that he/she will have something to look forward to.
6. When your child gets home from school, don't forget to inquire how his/her day went. Praise your child for his/her efforts.
These are simple yet effective ways of handling back to school doldrums. If you have additional tips, feel free to leave a comment.
