Beyond the Awards
September 19th 2006 22:39
My daughter is very shy, of course she isn't when she's at home and with the people she knows. But when she's in a different setting or meeting new people, she clams up. It takes time for her to warm up to others, even kids.
That's why I was very anxious her first day in Kindergarten, I thought she might bawl and throw a fit, but surprisingly she didn't. A week later, she had to take the bus going home. Again I thought we would have a hard time with this transition, but she appeared to enjoy it.
Going to school certainly has been a blessing for her, she is positively thriving. Last year she received the Student of the Month and Perfect Attendance Awards. She received two more awards in Reading and placed third in their Scinece Fair.
But beyond being good at school we also want her to grow up with a good heart. That's why last year we signed up to do volunteer work for the Salvation Army, which also gave her a certificate of appreciation for being the youngest volunteer.
Having a bright child is really something to be proud of. But beyond the awards, what really matters is for that child to grow up with a good heart.
Do you volunteer? Tell us about it.
