Bullying
January 30th 2007 23:58
Well, it's nice to be blogging again. I sure missed the few days I was unable to blog to attend to other responsibilities. To those who manage to blog daily, i bow down to you
On to today's topic.....
Early this year, a local high school student passed away after laying in a coma for 2 months. The student was a 15 year old male who was badly beaten up by a schoolmate while they were in school. The reason? They were fighting about a girl.
Currently the perpetrator is held under bail, and though residents theorize he may have had an accomplice, he maintains that he did it alone.
This is such a tragic incident for the family of the boy who died, for the school authorities because they are being questioned why there was no security available to prevent such incidents and for the family of the student who is now in prison.
Above all it is a tragedy for the victim who's life has been cut short.
Every year thousands of students around the globe are being subjected to bullying. I know how it feels to be bullied because I experienced it when I was a child. My husband was also bullied in school when he was young. I remember when I was in first grade there was this girl who repeatedly made fun of me. Once she stole my belt and tossed it inside the principal's office which was vacant at the time. I had to go inside the principal's office to retrieve it but when I went to open the door to exit I realized she locked me in. I was able to get out of the room after the pirncipal herself unlocked the door, surpised to find me there. Good thing is I was brave enough to tell her what happened and the bully was reprimanded.
As a parent, bullying is one of the things I hope my daughter never experiences. I talked to my daughter about this when she entered school and told her that if anyone was being mean or hurtful to her she should not be afraid to tell us and her teacher. I ask her everyday when she comes home from school what she did, what she learned or anything she wishes to share. Open communication is important if we want to know what's going on in our child's life. Also, teaching them about respecting others and self-respect is vital.
Have you ever been bullied? Were you ever a bully? Please share your thoughts.

Thanks for sharing yuor experience, I think school officials should be more aware that these things still occur in schools. It's good you managed to get away from those bullies. Kids these days think that if they avoid or tell on a bully that they are being sissy's. Actually, that's the best thing to do when you're being bullied - to tell a trusted adult.
