Does our schools make our children obese?
September 28th 2007 21:19
A study published on the American Journal of Preventative Medicine indicates that schools may be contributing to children's obesity by making high-fat foods, softdrinks and other junk food available in school cafeterias. They also mention that less physical education activities add to the problem.

Have you heard of Jamie Oliver? He did a television series on the very thing you are talking about but with schools in the UK. A lot of these kids didn't even like the taste of fresh vegetables. Some didn't even know what vegetable it was when they were shown.
He had to battle with the government to improve the food at school.
It is cheaper to pay for hot chips and frozen food than to make nutritious meals every day.
Here is Australia it's not so bad. Our canteen food is getting much better. But having said that, our kids don't rely on the canteen for lunch. Most kids bring lunch from home.

It's good to know over there in Australia this problem isn't as rampant. I've always wanted my daughter to bring lunch from home but the problem is when lunch time comes the food is already cold. It's a good thing the lunch program in her school isn't as bad, no chips, sweets or sodas.
