Early Signs of a Gifted Child
September 13th 2006 11:51
The Davidson Institute for Talent Development have conducted numerous studies regarding gifted children. Among their studies are the early signs of possible giftedness in infants, toddlers and preschoolers. Among their findings that may show signs of giftedness are:
- Infants that are very alert
- Long attention span
- Early motor skill and language development
- Have imaginary playmates
- Spoke first word at 9 months (median age)
- Sight read at age 4 (median age)

One of the things that puzzled me when my daughter was an infant was that she slept very little. Of course this equates to me not getting a lot of sleep as well. If she does get to sleep it was a very light sleep and she would constantly awake at the slightest noise.
This proved to be both difficult and challenging for me, I ended up tired and cranky sometimes due to lack of sleep. But not my daughter, she seemed to have boundless energy.
It is only now that I realized it was one of the signs of giftedness, which was a great relief to know.
If you have a child and you feel he/she may be gifted, here is a checklist that would be of help.
