Family Fire Escape Plan
September 22nd 2006 07:08
Last night there was a fire in the bulding right across where we live. It's just a stone's throw away so it was really scary. Luckily the building is a diagnostic clinic and nobody was inside. However, it was across an apartment complex where several families live.
Thick smoke was coming out but the fire was contained inside. My husband called the fire department and they responded immediately. After a few hours the fire was put out.
This experience made me realize three things:
1. The smell of the smoke is intense and overpowering. I can clearly understand why people die of smoke inhalation. Actually the smell still hung in the air until now.
2. When you're waiting for the fire fighters to arrive, minutes seem like hours.
3. We need a family fire escape plan.
Tips on Making a Fire Escape Plan:
1. Draw a map of your home and clearly label each room.
2. Figure out two ways of exiting each room and designate a meeting place outside your home for you family.
3. Remember what number to call in case of a fire and post that number near your phone.
4. Place smoke alarms around your home and test it occasionally to see if it's working.
5. Place an escape ladder in each room and practice how to use it. Make sure you can open and close the door or window of your escape route.
6. Have a family fire drill at least once a year so everyone will remember what to do.
7. Remember in case of a fire STOP, DROP and CRAWL.
Here is an excellent website that will help you create a family fire escape plan.
