From K to First Grade
October 11th 2006 02:04
Here's another guide I wrote this time featuring the books we used for First Grade.
Our First Grade Curriculum
- Phonics - Little Stories for Little Folks Level 2
- Penmanship - HWT My Printing Book
- Spelling - Spelling Workout A Student Worktext
- Math - MCP Math Level A
- History/Geography - Maps, Charts & Graphs A: Places Around Me
- Science - We have a binder full of science experiments which can be performed using household items.
- Art - Drawing With Children
- Music - Wee Sing CD's
Our schedule is:
MWF - Phonics, Penmanship and Spelling
TTh - Math, History/Geography and Science
Saturday - Art (aside from the book we will use we will also go to the
Public Library for story hours and to borrow books she can read.)
Sunday - Music (listening to CD''s and of course going to church)
Looking at this list it does seem to be a lot but since she goes to a regular school now we only do one hour of homeschooling per day so that she won't be too tired or burned out.
I really like the Drawing with Children book, actually it can also be used by adults. The author of this book, Mona Brookes, has an art school called Monart School of the Arts. Visit her website to learn more about her method.
