Fun With Bubbles

When I was young, my friends and I made bubbles out of gumamela flowers. We would gather a few flowers, pound it until a soapy liquid comes out, add a small amount of water and voila! Bubbles! We used thin wire rods with the ends curled into a circle to blow the bubbles. We had a blast!

Nowadays, kids don't need to pick and pound flowers when they want to make bubbles. A visit to your local toy store and you'll see the many wonderful assortments of bubble makers. We bought one called "Bubbles Within Bubbles" made by Seasons of Fun. It comes with a bubble maker which is battery operated and a small jar of bubble solution. The kit costs $6.99 plus we bought an extra large bottle of solution worth $0.99. Other types of bubble makers are also available from Seasons of Fun. The one we bought, as the name implies, blows huge bubbles with several small bubbles inside.

We went to the beach and started blowing bubbles; our daughter chased and popped it while giggling. Several children who were at the beach joined in the fun and before long, I was popping bubbles too!

It's amazing how much fun you can have with your kids with the simplest of things

Hello Cibbuano and Louie, thanks for the comments! Gumamela is commonly known as hibiscus. Some add detergent to the mixture but we learned that if you have enough flowers you'll be able to produce enough liquid to make bubbles. Yeah, my friends and I were very resourceful, I think most kids back then were.

oooh Gumamela! we had these in our garden when I was a kid so imagine how much bubbles we made! and how the poor plant almost always has no flowers my grandma would reprimand us daily... but who cares? Bubbles! hahaha

Hello Hazel! Haha, we used to sneak around the neigborhood picking these flowers so we could make enough liquid to make bubbles. Most of the neighbors didn't mind though
