Gifted Programs

There are different programs created to support gifted learners. The two most commonly used programs are:
Acceleration - Children are placed at an academic level based on their academic performance and not based on their age. At the high school level this is known as Advanced Placement (AP), where students tackle college-level subjects and they receive credit for any completed work.
Grouping - At the elementary level pull-out programs are sometimes used where the child attends a gifted class aside from attending a regular class. The child spends a set number of hours per week in a pull-out program. Another way of grouping is to combine students performing at the same level by suibject.
In my daughter's school they have both a pull-out program and grouping by subject level. My daughter attends a gifted class for 3 hours per week, aside from that she is grouped together with other students performing at the same level in language, reading and math.
If you have a gifted child it is important that you know what progams they offer for gifted learners in your child's school.
