Human Trafficking

Every week we try to rent dvd's for each of us - one for my daughter, one for me and one for my husband. This week we rented Air Buddies for our daughter, which, of course, we watched as a family. My husband on the other hand rented Lucky Number Slevin, which he watched alone cause it's not for kids and i'm not particularly fond of action films. As for me I rented Human Trafficking, a movie about, well, the title says it all.
I believe this has been, or sometimes still is, being shown on Lifetime TV but this is the first time I've seen this movie and it really shook me. This film is so intense, powerful, alarming and eye-opening. It depicts something that is still occuring rampantly in society - human trafficking.
Loosely defined, human trafficking is the act of forcing someone to do something against their will, usually of a sexual nature. Women, children, either boys or girls, are often the victims. Victims are either abducted, coerced or lured by the perpetrators to do something against their will from which the perpetrator gains a profit. Victims are treated as sex slaves, housed in poor conditions, beaten to submission, mentally tortured and other cruel tactics to gain power over the victims.
This is something that is still very present to this day and it is becoming a profitable business to evil-minded individuals. Sometimes the victims, after being subjected to this terrible ordeal, believes that this is what they want to do and they become complacent.
The film Human Trafficking stars Mira Sorvino and Donald Sutherland, to name a few. It revolves around how poverty and the promise of a better life lures victims and how there are people who, because of their thirst for money, would do anything to gain it even if at the expense of others. The film is about women and children who are victimized and how human trafficking occurs all over the world, not just in third world countries. It's about the unconditional love of parents and how a police woman's traumatic experience becomes her source of strength.
Like I said the film is very powerful, it will hit a nerve and leave you feeling troubled yet wanting to do something to make a difference. It will make you want to hug your kids tighter and be more vigilant. It is explicit without being trashy - it effectively avoids nude scenes which is hard to do considering the story.
I highly recommend that you watch this film, it's an eye-opener.
