If there's one thing parents shouldn't do...

I don't get the chance to watch TV as much as I used to but recently I chanced upon an episode of Supernanny. The episode I watched has your usual dose of misbehaving kids and flustered adults, but what struck me most was how much the parents bickered in front of their children. There's this scene where the parents were having an argument while their kids were present and one of the children wrote this message; "Shut-up or break-up!" You can see the parents visibly taken aback when they read this message.
That particular part of the show really made me sad because I know how it feels to witness two of the people you most love tear into each other day after day. My parents had their share of flaws but they were wonderful people when they were apart. Together....well, that's a different story.
I practically grew up hearing my parents argue, at times I even acted as mediator and unwilling messenger. Sadly, when they finally realized that what they needed to do was to let go of the past and forgive each other...when it finally dawned on them that they still loved each other, it was too late. My father died of a heart attack.
My husband and i try our best not to fight in front of our daughter, and yes it can be hard. But if there's one thing I've learned, it's that we should be careful about what we say or do in front of our kids. Because much as you think they aren't paying attention, THEY ARE.
