In Retrospect

In a way I've had my suspicions that my daughter is "gifted". Pardon me, I really don't like labeling anyone, especially if it's my child I'm talking about. But I can't think of any other appropriate word for it right now. So I'll just use the politically correct word - gifted.
Anyway, looking back from when she was a newborn I can now clearly see the signs:
- She was born almost two weeks early than her expected due date. I was just in my ob-gyne's office for a check up when my doctor proclaimed "I can feel the baby's head!" I guess my daughter was already bored inside my womb and wanted to see what the world outside looked like.
- One day when she was only a few months old I left her asleep on our bed and went to the kitchen to find something to eat. When I came back she was still asleep but was teetering precariously on the edge of our bed! When most babies would have been content just quietly lying down, my daughter was already rolling over.
- She uttered her first word when she was around six months old. No, it wasn't Mama or Dada, her first word was "bird".
- She didn't crawl; she sat up, stood and started walking on her own. She was already walking by her first birthday.
- At two years old she could speak very clearly and already knew the alphabet, numbers, colors and shapes.
- At three she was already well adept with the computer. She learned how to control the mouse very easily.
- At four she was already starting to read and asked very deep questions that would sometimes send me searching on the internet for an answer.
- At five her reading skill is well advanced for her age, she has already read over 50 books. She knows how to add and subtract. She can write legibly and is very good in art.
- She can be pretty intense. When she's happy, she's really happy and when she's mad, watch out!
- She doesn't like to conform to the norm. She will try to do things differently or improve on it.
- She has a tendency to question authority, which drives me nuts sometimes. When I tell her "Time to go to sleep", she will reply "Why?"
- My daughter has a very creative imagination.
- She feels deep empathy towards things, people or situations that won't usually affect other children. For example, she likes to give food to our neighbor's son because she feels sorry for him.
- She is very curious. She asks a lot of questions.
- She knows how to motivate herself, she's a self-starter.
I can go on forever, but you get the idea. Having a gifted child is both a wondrous and difficult feeling. But above all, I know it will be one exciting ride.
