Gifted Parenting - Parenting a Gifted Child

Chronicling my journey as the mother of a gifted child.

From IE to Firefox

March 24th 2009 08:31
For years now I've been a loyal user of Internet Explorer, but due to work-related issues, I had to switch to Mozilla Firefox. I must say though, that after a couple of days of using Firefox I'm really impressed. I especially like the available add-ons, particularly one that is called Morning Coffee. Morning Coffee lets you enter the urls of sites you usually visit and arrange it per day. So let's say there are certain sites you visit on Tuesdays, you just enter it in your Morning Coffee. Then when you open your Firefox browser and click the coffee mug icon, all your must-visit sites open in tabs. Try it out, as well as the other available add-ons for Firefox. To download Mozilla Firefox click here. To download the Morning Coffee add-on click here.

Get Your Gift

March 13th 2009 06:06
Another Friday, another random post. I know it's late for Valentine's gifts but I think this one is cute. You can create a virtual gift basket on Giftfantasia.com. You can choose the gift wrap and presents to put in your basket, then you can copy the code and embed it on your blog or Web site. Visitors can then collect the items they like.

Go ahead, pick one Click on the title link of this post if you can't see the gift basket.

What's Your Learning Style?

March 9th 2009 10:42
My worse subject in college was Statistics; I don't know why, there's something about numbers and graphs that completely confuses me. Add to that the fact that my professor's voice could only be heard by those sitting in the first two rows. Also, she had this annoying habit of blocking whatever she is writing on the board with her body. Needless to say I flunked Statistics and had to retake it during the summer.

Fortunately, I had a different professor during the summer; someone whose teaching style made my worse subject surprisingly enjoyable for me. By the end of the class, I had earned a B.

Through the years, many tests have been created to determine a person's learning style. I think this would especially be meritous if these tests were given to students while they are young. Imagine how advantageous it would be if we could match a student's learning style to an educator's teaching style.

Speaking of tests, here is one that you (or your child) can take online to determine how you learn best. According to this test, I'm a tactile learner (40%). Try it!

Does Your Child Know What You Do?

Yesterday, I had a very enlightening conversation with my 8-year old; she asked me to describe what my job is. It made me think, that even if our children knows what our jobs are ("Mom's a writer, Dad's an engineer", etc.) they may not fully comprehend what we really do for a living. This is what makes "Take Your Kids to Work Day" very important, which unfortunately isn't so popular where we live.

Back to School Doldrums

The Christmas season came and went by so quickly and most of us are still in holiday mode (I must admit I still haven't taken down our Christmas decors). Going back to work or school (or what I call "back to reality") can be challenging after a long holiday. This is especially true for children, because it's not easy for them to shift from play to work mode as quickly as adults can.

Inspiring Quotes for the New Year

January 2nd 2009 14:50
I've come to believe that each of us has a personal calling that's as unique as a fingerprint - and that the best way to succeed is to discover what you love and then find a way to offer it to others in the form of service, working hard, and also allowing the energy of the universe to lead you. - Oprah Winfrey

Personality can open doors, but only character can keep them open. - Elmer G. Letterman

Cram I Am (No Longer)

December 16th 2008 06:22
One of my closest friends do her Christmas shopping months in advance, while I often end up doing my shopping on the last minute. However, this year I'm proud to say that as of today, I''m finished with my gift-shopping! By my track record that really is a miracle.

While I was shopping, I couldn't help but be amazed at the large assortment of toys out in the market today. Some of the newest toys I purchased this year include Martian Matter, iDog Ampd, Rubiks Revolution and my fave - Night Vision Infrared Stealth Goggles. Of course, classic toys such as Barbies and gameboards are mainstays on my Christmas shopping list.
