My Daughter is Gifted…Now What?
September 11th 2006 00:32
On January of this year my daughter brought home a letter from her teacher requesting permission that she be tested for "giftedness". Of course I was surprised, I know my daughter is smart but I never seriously considered she is gifted. After the shock died down, the feelings of euphoria soon engulfed me and I began calling people I know telling them of this latest news. Yes, I admit I'm a bit of a stage mom.
The next letter from her school arrived a few days later. This time it was an acceptance letter informing me that my daughter has been tested and the tests revealed that she is indeed gifted! Of course this news had me jumping up and down to the amusement of my child. But after the euphoric state came the daunting question....what now?
It's a strange kind of feeling - the happiness of knowing your child is gifted and the realization of how much responsibility it entails to ensure your child continues to be motivated.
I've decided to take it one day at a time, one step at a time.
Speaking of taking things one step at a time...five years ago today, a senseless and tragic attack on lives and properties occurred, shocking the whole world. The 9/11 bombings will forever be etched in history as the day when victims turned heroes, when tears turned to hope and when good continues to triumph over evil.
Here is a song from Kristi Nelson titled "Mama Will Hold Me" which captures the feelings of a child who lost her dad during the 9/11 attacks.
