Natural Cures for Cough
December 15th 2006 05:25
My daughter missed her last day of school this year due to a slight fever last night. This morning she is coughing and has a runny nose. Yes, it's the flu.
When this happens I go for natural cures first before moving on to medicines. I learned this from my mom who was into herbal remedies and most of the time it did work. Since this is the flu season in most countries because of the change in weather, I'd like to share some of the natural remedies for cough that my mom taught me.
1. Salt Water Gargle: Simply mix salt with moderateky hot water and use it for gargling. Repeat this every 4 hours. You'll feel the itchiness of your throat lessen.
2. Lemon and Honey Drink: You can either drink this moderately hot or chilled. Mix lemon juice, honey and water. Make sure not to add too much honey, you'll want the taste to be slightly sour-sweet. This will help cleanse your throat.
3. Ginger Juice: Drink either moderately hot or chilled. Peel ginger and boil it. Use the juice and add honey or you can drink it as is. Some singers drink this before a performance because it helps cleanse the throat.
Do you know of other natural cures?

Learning Something Everyday
It is always good to know the good ol' remedies, isn't it?
Recently I discovered that pineapples also has the ability to fight cough and colds. Perhaps you'd like to take a lot at this:
The goodness of pineapple
Of course, it is best to have the pineapple juice rather than eating it as the fibre might cause some itchiness at the throat. Do remember to have the juice in room temperature, and make sure the pineapple is the fully ripe one.

I have a good one. I swear by it. It's for nausea - so if you're hung over or pregnant listen up.
Grab and lemon and scratch the skin with your nails to release a lemony smell and breathe that lemony smell deep into your lungs. Keep at it for a little while and the nausea will go.

I agree with thefirst two, hadn't heard about the ginger, it was interesting to read the other comments, too.

I've heard about pineapples as well, a neighbor of mine told me about it. But the ones she uses are the canned pineapples. I think fresh juice, from ripe pineapples, like you suggested is better. Thank you, i will try it.
Mrs. M,
This one I haven't heard before, thank you!
Katyzzz,
Yes, the ginger juice doesn't taste that good though but I try to think of how good it will make me feel afterwards instead.
