Summer Activities for Kids
May 20th 2008 06:01
In the U.S. school is out from June to mid-August. This means, we have less than 2 weeks to go until summer vacation. Every summer I make it a point to enroll my daughter in a class she likes; we began doing this since she was 6.
At 6 years old she tried guitar lessons and stuck with it for the whole summer. She actually was pretty good and progressing really fast. Unfortunately, her teacher's schedule changed so she could no longer continue giving my daughter lessons. We did try to find her another guitar teacher but she didn't like him as much as her first teacher. Today, she still plays the guitar under my guidance but not as regularly as before. Here's a video of her playing one of the first pieces she learned when she was 6.
When she was 7 she decided she wanted to learn how to swim so we enrolled her in beginner's swim class. This time she stuck with it beyond summer vacation and is actually taking swimming lessons to this day. She has progressed to the next level and has become a very strong swimmer. Most importantly, she has overcome her fear of water. Here's a picture of her swimming:
This year she says she wants to enroll in art classes so my husband and I are looking for a school that offers it.
We do let our daughter explore her different interests provided she shows us that she's really serious about it. I do believe that letting children explore their talents and interests would benefit them in many ways. I also make a conscious effort not to burden her with my own unrealized dreams. We are all different and our kids are no exception.
Ultimately though, I think what every parent wishes is for their child to become kind-hearted, responsible and decent individuals who has a zest for life. If she ends up taking any of her interests seriously in the future and make a career out of it, then well and good. If not, at least she had the opportunity to explore these different creative outlets that will help make her a well-rounded person.
