The Downside to Fame
June 2nd 2009 15:07
By now many of you may be familiar with the name Susan Boyle; the 47-year old woman from Scotland who shot to stardom after her brilliant audition on Britain's Got Talent. Susan's story inspired millions of people, including me. And if residents in the United States were allowed to vote on the said show, I would have surely voted for her. Alas, Susan didn't win Britain's Got Talent, it was a dance group called Diversity that won. However, I'm sure offers are lined up for Susan because she really has a beautiful voice and I believe she deserves a break.
The latest news on Susan is that she has been admitted into a hospital for what seems to be exhaustion. I can only imagine the extreme pressure she has been subjected to as the result of her sudden fame. What really bothers me about all this is how quickly some people change their minds; one minute they are celebrating this woman and the next they are tearing her down. Is it really in our nature to be so cruel?
Many of us dream of becoming famous, but there is also a downside to fame. One of it is the loss of privacy, your every word and action is captured and analyzed, often wrongly.
I wish Susan well and hope that she has a strong support system to help her adjust to her new-found fame.
