The Importance of Reading

My daughter received an award in Reading today and needless to say I'm thrilled!. I started teaching my daughter how to read when she was 4 and six months later she was already finishing easy readers.
Today at the age of 6 she is reading at a 3rd grade level. Yes, she is a strong reader but most importantly she loves to read and is excited with all the things she learns from each book she finishes.
Some of the materials I used when we started reading lessons at home were:
Alphabet flashcards - I introduced one letter and letter sound a day
Whiteboard and marker - I wrote the letter on the whiteboard so she'll see how to write it.
Manuscript paper and pencils - She practiced writing the letter for the day.
We would also do an activity related to the letter for the day. For example, for "C" we made a "Card" for a sick friend. When we finished all the letters I proceeded to teach her how to read two letter words such as in, on, at. Then we went on to three letter words and so forth.
We also did online activities by visiting websites which promotes the love of reading. Websites i highly recommend are the following:
Starfall - This awesome website has four levels: ABC's, Learn To Read, It's Fun To Read and I'm Reading. Each level has interactive games, online books, music, arts and crafts activities, a skills level list and more.
Studydog - Offers a downloadable reading program that is aligned with the National Reading Panel findings. There are three levels, lessons are presented in a game format where points are earned for each finished lesson.
Book Adventure - This is a reading incentive program where kids can look up book titles they can read at their grade or reading level. They then have to read books and go to the website to answer questions. points are given for each correct answer and accumulated points may be exchanged for prizes.
Reading is very important, it opens young minds to endless possibilities and gives them the freedom to let their imagination soar. For us adults reading a book keeps our mind active and gives us ample ammunition in times of social gatherings
Both my husband and I are book lovers, we have hundreds of books at home. Currently i'm reading "Life Makeovers" by Cheryl Richardson. What book/s are you reading right now?

Mum's Word
I'm just about to start "The Graduate". Recommended to me by my husband. I just finished reading "The Wedding" by Nicholas Sparks (it's the sequel to "The Notebook".)
My daughter's current favourite book is "One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish".
My son's current favourite is "There a Wocket in my Pocket".
Even my 15 month old is getting in on the act. It's a very curious thing to watch look through a picture book. You can almost hear their little brain ticking over. It's a joy to watch.
My kids think that reading books is fun. Thankfully.
I love books too. All kinds on all subjects. History, reference, novels, biographies, essays, etc.
Love & stuff

Glad to know both our families share the same love for books. It is amazing to see children read, their excitement is reflected on their eyes.
