This is Sad
November 8th 2006 03:37
Gracia MalaxEtxebarria, a gifted child, is in the midst of a court battle. In 2003, when she was just 9 years old she was refused by the education system of Queensland to advance to high school due to their concerns over her social development if she was allowed to do so. What ensued next is a lawsuit based on discrimination. In April the court ruled that no discrimination occurred but last October 4, Supreme Court justice John Helman granted Gracia's appeal. A new hearing has been set. More details here.
What makes this sad is that it had to end up in court. In the meantime I wonder how Gracia is doing.

My little one is deemed "advanced"; he hasn't been tested. He is not "gifted" - that would have been idenified by now - but he is certainly ahead for his age group. Sadly, we did not get into Kindergarten this year because there are area inclusion zones for applicants where we live - in Sydney's Inner West - and we are not in a catchment. I'm very worried about him languishing away for another year at day care.

Little Angry Doll there are many who homeschool their gifted children effectively.I'm sorry to hear your son wasn't able to enroll this year. Was he supposed to go to a public or private school? You can still homeschool though.
Hello Adele. Yes, they couldv'e just talked about it in-depth and perhaps they could've come out with a solution that would satisfy both parties. I do wonder how Gracia is doing, especially in her studies, since this has been in court.
