Violence in Schools
October 5th 2006 00:25
As a parent I expect that when I drop off my child at school she will be safe and cared for by trained individuals. But sometimes the greatest tragedies that happen in school are caused either by outsiders or fellow students.
Such is the case of what happened recently in an Amish school. I mean if these people who live simply cannot be safe, what more are the kids who go to public schools?
I can only imagine what the parents of those poor children must be feeling right now. What triggers a person to do such a horrible crime? What can our government and school officials do to prevent such a gruesome incident?
This is certainly not the first time this happened in a school setting. I found a timeline of Worldwide School Shootings that spans from 1996 to present. In most cases the shooter is profiled as an outcast or someone who has deep mental and emotional problems.
if we as individuals and/or parents don't do something about this, if our government and school officials don't act on this, violent incidents such as these will continue.
Our children are our future and if we can't protect them, if we don't address this problem regarding the continued rise of school violence, what kind of future will they be living in?
