What's happening?
February 5th 2008 07:22
I subscribe to Google Alerts to keep myself updated on issues like current events and parenting. One of the search terms I subscribe to brought up the following headlines today:
Assault and child porn conviction for 70-year-old Saanich man
Suspect in child molestation is captured at friend's house
Father loses child because of porn
What's happening to our society? It seems like child abuse and molestation cases are becoming rampant and the most alarming fact is, the perpetrator is someone the child knows. This is really frightening and precisely the reason why I don't read the daily paper in the morning. And yet this is the reality that we live in today so what can we do about it?
As a parent I try my best to maintain an open communication with my daughter. My daughter needs to know that if she has any questions or concerns she can come to us without fear that she will be judged. I also see to it that certain safety precautions are observed such as being there at the bus stop to pick her up after school, reminding her not to stray from us when we're in the mall, etc. These may seem like no-brainers but these little things are really important in safeguarding our children.
The Child Welfare Information Gateway has a helpful article on the signs and symptoms of an abused or neglected child. If you suspect a child in your neighborhood is being abused, the information in that website would be extremely helpful.
I know many things in life cannot be controlled but there are some things that can be avoided. How do you keep your children safe? Please share it with us.
