Who is the better person?
October 12th 2006 01:53
This is based on a true story:
One lazy and humid afternoon I was chatting away with two acquaintances. Acquaintance A is very successful in her career and is a very religious person. Acquaintance B s currently out of work and rarely goes to church.
Then a knock interrupted our chatter, I opened the door and there stood my neighbor holding her baby, smiling somewhat sheepishly. She told me her baby has run out of milk and that her husband is still at work. She asked if she could borrow money to buy milk.
Now I'm the type of person who goes a little crazy when I have money on my hands so I don't usually stash money at home. I went to my bedroom searched for some loose change but came out short. I asked my companions if they could chip in. I was expecting Acquaintance A to hand me some cash since I know she carries a stash in her wallet. To my surprise she offered some lame excuse about forgetting her wallet.
Then Acquaintance B stood up searched in his pockets and handed my neighbor some cash. This surprised me even further knowing that he's been short of cash lately.
My neighbor thanked us and promised to pay us back as soon as her husband gets home. After she left Acquaintance A said we shouldn't trust people too much especially in terms of money. Acquaintance B on the other hand said "Well, it will be in her conscience if she doesn't make good with her word. I, on the other hand, just want to help."
So which of the two is a better person?
There is actually a follow-up to this story, but that will be for tomorrow
